Has he ever been betrayed in past relationships? Because if he has, then thats most likely why he doesn't trust you. Once someone has been betrayed and hurt badly, they do everything they can to protect themselves from that happening again. He obviously was starting to like you a lot and then started to worry about what would happen when he leaves for the summer and was scared that something would happen that would hurt him like the past and so he decided the best way to avoid that would to be to break up with you.
Thats what I think is going on with him, I am not sure of course, but this is common for people who have been hurt in the past.
Maybe if you talk to him and find out why he feels the way he does. You can try to convince him to trust you because trust needs to be earned and you two have been together too short of a time for him to see if you can be trusted or not.
Maybe let him know that you understand and that maybe you two can pick things up again when he gets back...
